Strategies driving Department of Defense information technology advancement have gone well beyond battlefield applications. Successful defense transformation hinges on the recognition that information is a critical enabler for ensuring mission success. To that end, the Defense Department continues to push toward a network centric force that can increase efficiency and effectiveness across defense operations, intelligence functions, and business processes. The use of improved and secured cyber space, whether it be to the battlefield soldier or remote decision makers, will permit access to the latest relevant and accurate information in making critical decisions, in the most challenging scenarios of situational awareness.

Evident is the key fact that key initiatives driving this net-centric transformation is secure information sharing and interoperability to enable effective and agile decision making.
